Mdm Tan Soh Hwa

Mdm Tan Soh Hwa first started pursuing her interest in music when she graduated from Crescent Girls’ School. She was then a prize winner in the 2nd and 3rd National Music Competition which was held in Singapore.

Awarded a scholarship by the Public Service Commission (Singapore) then, she went on to the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, Missouri in the United States of America, where she graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Music Performance (horn) in 1989. During her stay, she also performed with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Springfield Orchestra in Illinois.

In 2002, she was invited to be an adjudicator of the 6th School Band Challenge held in Malaysia. The event, held on November 10th at the IOI Mall in Kuala Lumpur, saw the participation of a total of 23 primary and secondary school bands from Selangor.

Under her baton, her school bands were awarded gold medals on many installments of the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) central judging and also achieved good results in the National Band Competition in 2008. Similarly, Mus’Art Wind Orchestra also achieved a 1st prize in the 1st division of the World Music Contest held in Kerkrade, The Netherlands in 2009.

Currently, Mdm Tan is teaching four secondary school bands namely Anglican High School, Crescent Girls’ School, Fairfield Methodist (Secondary) School and Nan Hua High School. Other bands include the SOKA Wind Ensemble and the Mus’Art Wind Orchestra.

 


Wilson Ong (Assistant Music Director)

Wilson started music education at an early age learning the organ, violin and piano. He then picked up the trombone at the age of 10 and has continued to play the trombone ever since.

After obtaining a diploma in Mass Communication in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he was offered a scholarship to study music as the pioneer batch of students at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, NUS, and he has since graduated with an honors degree.

An active performer in the classical, pop and jazz genres, he has worked with artists like Michael Lloyd, Barry Tuckwell, Johan de Meij, Dick Lee, Fei Xiang, Anita Sarawak, Laura Fygi, Winton Marsalis and members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Festival Orchestra, which is a regular feature at the Singapore Arts Festival. Wilson has also played for various musicals and operas like the Broadway production of Bernstein’s West-Side Story, Chang & Eng, Puccini’s Tosca and Madam Butterfly and Toy Factory’s Cabaret.

Wilson is a freelance band director and the assistant conductor at Mus’art Wind Orchestra. He is currently a Master’s student at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
